HISTORY
More than a century ago, in 1889, John Livingston commenced practice in Durban on his own as a solicitor. Four years later Josiah Jasper Hillier did the same. Neither of them could have visualised at the time how their two small practices would develop in the future.
As the dusty settlement on Durban Bay grew into a bustling metropolis with the busiest harbour on the African continent, so the practice developed. In 1901 John Livingston advertised in Scotland for an assistant and this encouraged William Doull to emigrate and start work with him for the princely salary of £10 a month. In time he became a partner and others were recruited locally over the years. Josiah Hillier's firm developed at the same pace.
In 1989 Livingston, Doull and Winterton celebrated their centenary and they merged with Leandy and Partners, who happened to amalgamate with Hillier and Company many years ago.
The two firms became known as Livingston Leandy Inc.
